The island of Dia, is located 7 miles north of the port of Heraklion and is a very important habitat for endemic plants and animals. For this reason, it has been designated as a protected area under the Natura 2000 network. On the island’s cliffs, a rare species of falcon, the Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae), nests. There are many wild rabbits (Lepus cuniculus), which you will often see emerging from the bushes.
Additionally, the island is home to a large population of the unique species found only in Crete, the Cretan wild goat, or kri-kri (Capra aegagrus cretica), and if we’re lucky, we might encounter some of these animals on its steep cliffs.
